2011 Top Companies for Leaders Study

Initiated in 2001 by Hewitt Associates (now Aon Hewitt) and conducted in partnership with The RBL Group and Fortune since 2007, the Top Companies for Leaders study examines best-in-class leadership and talent strategies, practices, and outcomes of companies around the world. In 2011, The RBL Group again partnered with Aon Hewitt and Fortune for the fifth edition of this comprehensive study to identify firms who excel at developing leaders.

How It Works

Top Companies for Leaders Study is the most comprehensive longitudinal study of talent management and leadership practices around the globe. Surveys have been completed and screened for practices consistent with being able to attract, retain, and develop future leaders. After the initial screening process, additional analysis and data was gathered on a select list of finalists and was reviewed by a panel of respected and independent judges. These judges then determined the final list of 25 Global Top Companies for Leaders.

Rankings are based on strength of leadership practices and culture, examples of leader development on a global scale, impact of leadership in communities in which they operate, business performance, company reputation, succession management, and the ability to stay committed to building leadership amidst the current economic downturn.  Those not chosen as a top company do not have their company’s information publicly shared. In 2011, 470 companies participated, each completing a detailed questionnaire. From those submissions, the Top Companies for Leaders research team identified finalists and conducted hundreds of interviews with senior executives. From these inputs, we are able to compare the talent management practices of the best companies around the globe on literally hundreds of data points. In our analysis, we found the gaps between the Top Companies and all others are often quite dramatic. Hewitt conducted the 2007 and 2009 Top Companies for Leaders Study in partnership with FORTUNE and The RBL Group.
