The HR Competency Study (HRCS) began in 1987 and has been updated every 5 years, making this the 6th round of data collection. The HRCS is the largest global study on HR with over 35,000 ratings over 25 years and one of the most referenced HR studies in the world. The HRCS has helped define and shape the role of HR as a strategic contributor in business operations.
The 2011 study examines individual competence and how the HR department influences business results, which will shape the next five years of the HR profession. The study seeks to answer the questions, “What knowledge and abilities are necessary for successful HR professionals and HR departments?” and “How are requirements and expectations evolving over time, across industries, by region?” The HRCS is conducted jointly by The RBL Group, the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and our Regional Partners.
Benefits to You and Your HR Department
• Company Reports: Companies with 4 or more HR participants will receive a company report that will help them build competencies within their HR departments.
• Individual Reports: Individual participants with at least 4 completed raters (1 supervisor and 3 associate raters) will receive an individual report that will compare their results against global benchmarks. This will help individuals develop action plans to enhance their development and contribution.
• Feedback Sessions: Participants are invited to a feedback session hosted by your regional partner in the first quarter of 2012 to review the study results, examine current trends, and discuss future HR agendas.
• No financial costs for participating companies: this study is funded by the Ross School of Business and The RBL Group, with assistance from our Regional Partners. There are no costs to participating companies. We are only asking that you invest a small amount of time to participate in helping the global HR community understand how competence and need is evolving.
Timing and Process Flow
The data collection phase of the HRCS will run from May through September 2011. Participating individuals and companies will be given complementary reports at the conclusion of the study in December 2011.
The HRCS uses an online tool to gather information. This online tool incorporates 360 methodology: company leadership elects HR employees (participants) to participate in the study; the participants, in turn, elect ‘raters’ who can provide feedback on his or her understanding of HR competencies; both participants and raters take an online assessment.
Up to 20 HR professionals in your company can be elected to participate. If you have multiple business units, you may choose to elect up to 20 participants per unit. At least 4 participants in each business unit must complete in order to receive a group report. Individuals not associated with a company may also participate and will receive an individual report if at least 4 raters complete (1 supervisor and 3 associate raters).
How to Participate
Please email hrcs@rbl.net if you or your company would like to participate. A unique link will be prepared for your company, which will then need to be sent to the HR participants whom you would like to participate. When an employee clicks on the link, they will be given instructions on enrolling in the study.
The deadline to complete the survey will automatically be set for 3 weeks from the day your company’s link is created. If you need an extension, please email hrcs@rbl.net.
