Dave Ulrich & Norm Smallwood facilitated our discussion with Senior HR Leaders on building a strong leadership bench.

Improving the quality of leadership never seems to go away and, in fact, becomes increasingly important.  One of the dimensions of leadership is building the next generation, or leadership bench.  Strong leadership bench is the ultimate measure of effective leadership development activities. A strong leadership bench would mean that leaders at every level are creating value for internal and external stakeholders in a manner that increases confidence in the future and the ability to execute superbly today.

In this “think tank” workshop, we will discuss some of our ideas for how to build stronger bench as well as provide a forum for each company to describe their own best practices so that maximum learning can occur. Topics included:
• Building a case for leadership and leadership development
• Defining what effective leadership looks like both from the inside/out (leadership code) and outside/in (leadership brand)
• Assessment leadership to determine the gaps inherent in the leadership bench
• Investing in future leadership with a focus on the individual development plan to build leaders in new markets
• Determining the quality of leadership and leadership development efforts
• Weaving leadership into the on going organization processes
