Abundance: The Why of Work

When

Dec 08, 2010

Over the last few years, Dave and Wendy Ulrich have worked to discover how people create meaning in their personal and professional lives.  In their new book, The Why of Work: How Great Leaders Create Abundant Organizations That Win, they synthesize volumes of thinking and research about meaning into seven drivers of meaning or seven areas of abundance.  One of the central themes of this body of work is that leaders are meaning makers and that work is a universal place for people to find meaning.  Leaders who are meaning makers help employees create meaning which then leads to increased customer share and investor performance.  Leaders as meaning makers help build sustainable and abundant organizations.  These are the organizations employees want to work for, customers want to do business with, and investors want to support.

Our December Mini-Forum explored what RBL Institute members are doing to create abundant and highly-engaged organizations, and what companies are doing to develop leaders who create, for themselves and for others, a sense of abundance (meaning, purpose, hope, pleasure) that not only engages employees but also delivers value to customers, investors, and communities.

Attending Institute member companies included Applied Materials, Capital One, Flextronics, HP, Pfizer, Siemens, and Statoil.
